The SFHA Housing Management Conference - The Changing Face of Housing Management, provides housing management staff with an effective opportunity to share information with each other and to hear about major policy and other developments in the housing management field.

This year has been another challenging one, with tenants and organisations feeling the effects of the economic downturn and a possible double dip recession looms.  Contradictions abound.  Proposed changes to Housing Benefit and wider welfare reforms are forcing landlords to think about the effectiveness of their methods of rent setting and collection, while promoting financial inclusion, income maximisation and the alleviation of fuel poverty.  The Scottish Government is currently looking at ways to make the ‘best use of stock’, which may include fundamental changes to tenancy agreements and some succession rights.  There may also be proposals to further restrict the Right to Buy.  Tenancy sustainment initiatives should also figure highly on the radar of housing associations, particularly as we head towards the 2012 homelessness target.  However, we also have proposals to modernise the system of regulation and governance for our sector and the introduction of a Social Housing Charter, which many believe has been unduly influenced by a small number of tenant activists.  While all of this is going on tenancies and houses still need to be managed, sustained and maintained; all of which are functions that often get overlooked yet still have to be delivered.

The conference will aim to challenge the sector to re-examine its role and assist in allowing it, along with the SFHA, to shape the agenda rather than simply react to it.
