Housing (Scotland) Act Becomes Law: SFHA Comment

Responding to the news that the Right to Buy will be curbed as the Housing (Scotland) Act becomes law, the SFHA called the Act

“a step in the right direction.”

SFHA Chief Executive Mary Taylor said:

“The Housing (Scotland) Act is a step in the right direction. While the SFHA welcomes the restrictions to Right to Buy included in the Act, which will preserve vital affordable homes, we feel that the Scottish Government could and should have gone further.

“30,000 housing association homes will become subject to Right to Buy for the first time in 2012, and the Scottish Government has missed an opportunity to legislate for a blanket protection of these properties. This would have allowed Scotland’s social landlords to focus their energies on the many other challenges facing the affordable housing sector rather than go through the inefficient process of applying for individual exemptions.”
