BHA supports Eyemouth initiatives

Berwickshire Housing Association (BHA) is supporting projects in Eyemouth which will help tackle food poverty and also provide sports equipment for Eyemouth Primary School.

BHA is providing funding to Splash for their new project branching from the food Larder, which was set up earlier in the year to reduce food waste, provide groceries to people shielding or in isolation and tackle food poverty.

Splash is aiming to provide cooking and taster sessions to the service users of the Larder, where around 80% are BHA customers. Splash will liaise with Healthy Living Network (HLN), who will be providing recipes based on what food items are available from the Larder and both Splash and volunteers will cook up the dishes for service users to taste and collect the recipes and ingredients used to cook at home.

Volunteers include BHA customers and young people, who will in turn develop new life skills, build confidence and support others from their community, to highlight food waste issues and learn to cook healthy meals on a very low budget.

BHA have also pledged funding to Eyemouth Primary School who are trying to raise £1,000 to purchase large pieces on gymnastics equipment.

The school has been holding a sponsored event linked to the recent Tokyo Olympics. Pupils have been asking people to sponsor them to walk / run / jog the 5719 miles from Eyemouth to Tokyo, which they are trying to achieve as a collective.

BHA’s Community Initiatives Manager Dougie Paterson said: “BHA are delighted to support Splash in their efforts to provide healthy food choices through their larder and local volunteers. We also hope our pledge toward purchase of gymnastic equipment will help Eyemouth Primary School reach their final target and encourage others to support this wonderful cause.”
