Bield’s St Andrews housing development welcomes first tenant

The 30 apartments in Malory House are one and two-bedroom homes and – under a pioneering project – are being split 50/50 with priority cases from Fife Council’s housing waiting list.

A new affordable housing development in St Andrews has welcomed its first tenant into his dream retirement home.

Seventy-nine-year-old retiree Anthony Deale was one of the first to set foot inside Bield’s newest development, Malory House.

A customer of 12 years, Anthony had previously lived at the housing provider’s nearby Marine Place before taking the opportunity to move into the new accessible development, which was officially launched in September.

Anthony originally moved to St Andrews to be closer to his daughter, Emma, who was studying in the area. His new home is now just a short drive away.

Daughter Emma McHale said: “We weren’t originally looking for a new home for my dad, but, when we saw what Malory House had to offer, we thought it was a great opportunity.

“As an elderly man, a change like this can be rather daunting, however, when he saw the location as well as the quality of the build – it was a no brainer.

“The location offers the best of both worlds. It is really near the town centre, but far enough away to enjoy some quiet time and relaxation”.

Ms McHale added: “My dad has been with Bield for many years now, and he’s been very happy. I don’t think we would have considered such a big move if it hadn’t been for the team.

“Bield really went above and beyond to make sure the process was as smooth and easy as possible. From start to finish, they have been so helpful.

“The layout and accessibility of Malory House is much better suited to my dad’s needs and is full of like-minded people. I’d say the development is ideal for those who wish to retain their independence but want to leave the worries of maintenance and gardens to someone else.

“It’s great to see my dad thriving in his new home, and the main thing is I know how safe he is in the development – the other positive is that he is only down the road from me!”

Dr Lynne Douglas, Chief Executive of Bield Housing and Care, said: “We’re delighted to hear how positive Anthony’s move has been.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for individuals in the area to secure a sought-after one and two-bedroom home – St Andrews truly is one of the finest places to live in Scotland.”
