Dramatic scenes at ng homes' development as Scotland’s finest fire service personnel carry out fire training

Some of Scotland's finest fire personnel battered their way into a vacant ng homes’ flat to showcase the new realistic training the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service puts its staff through.

The training specifically concerned breathing apparatus teams from across different watches being put through a variety of different search and rescue scenarios.

The unoccupied two bedroom flat in Springburn was made available to the SFRS crew from Springburn with the aim of creating a new and realistic training environment, to help prepare SFRS staff in the event of an actual fire. It is imperative that firefighters get this training to ensure they are best equipped to save lives in the future.

Douglas Miller, SFRS Watch Manager for Springburn Fire Station, said “The training was of great value to a number of personnel who are approaching their firefighter competency assessments.

Jim Hymas, Local Senior Officer for Glasgow, said “Feedback from all those involved has been very positive and it was agreed this was a valuable resource in maintaining and developing firefighting skills. Thanks to ng homes for their assistance and hopefully this event marks the start of an ongoing programme of access to void properties for training events.”

The housing association was delighted to facilitate the training and help support the development of Glasgow’s firefighters, as ng homes is committed to supporting fire safety and building a closer relationship with key community organisations.

John Thorburn, Chairperson of ng homes said: “This essential firefighting training for SFRS, gives them the chance to experience what it would be like if a fire was to break out in a residential environment. Supporting these training days also reinforces our commitment to fire safety and ensuring that our tenants feel safe and secure in their homes.”
