Housing apprentice case study: Beth Hudson, Albyn Housing Society

Learn more about the benefits apprentices can bring your organisation at the SFHA’s event on 12 April.

After deciding that university wasn’t for her, 19-year-old, Beth Hudson decided that a modern apprenticeship would be a great opportunity to learn new life skills as well as enhancing skills she already has.

She is currently studying a two-year SVQ3 in Business and Administration whilst working as a receptionist administrator at Albyn Housing Society. Beth will complete her apprenticeship in June 2018.

“When I was in school, I never knew that office based apprenticeships were available; it was something that I had not discovered until I had left school and carried out research of my own.

“Like many, I knew that university wasn’t for me, however, I still wanted to learn and progress. I found that doing an apprenticeship gave me the best of both worlds, and I would definitely recommend it.”

Beth is mainly based on Albyn’s reception in Inverness. However, it was important for Beth, as part of her career and college work, to gain knowledge in other departments. Every Thursday, Beth works Albyn’s Invergordon Office, gaining skills and understanding in other departments such as finance, assets and corporate. She also has protected time every week to carry out her studies and update her evidence portfolio.

Albyn Housing Services Officer Kirsty Campbell said:

“Beth is a valued member of our Team here at Albyn Housing. She brings a new dynamic and perspective to the society. It has been a pleasure to see her skills and confidence grow.”

“Our Board and Leadership Team are keen to continue with further modern apprenticeships.  One of our Strategic Objectives is to ‘support communities to thrive’, and we feel that modern apprenticeships really tie in well with this objective, as it aids young people into employment whilst gaining further qualifications and personal development. Young people are the future of our communities.”
If you would like to learn more about the benefits apprentices can bring your organisation, the SFHA is holding the Housing Scotland Apprentice Event on 12 April at the City of Glasgow College’s Riverside Campus.

The event also sees the return of the Apprentice Challenge, a competition for apprentices from SFHA member organisations.

You can book your place at the event and find out more about the challenge on the SFHA website
