To mark International Women’s Day 2022, the female staff members at Dunbritton Housing Association joined together for a coffee morning and shared their thoughts on the key challenges facing women, the advice they give to others looking to join the sector.

What are the key challenges you feel face women in the workplace?

The main challenges would be flexible policies that suit women and the opportunities to become leaders. – Heather Maitz, Finance Manager.

I feel that the biggest challenge for woman within the workspace is childcare. –
Claire Samain, Corporate Services Officer.

Historically male characteristics are built into the foundation of leadership roles.  Women face challenges such as: childcare, pay inequality, and policies discrimination in the workplace, however, it is great to see many organisations showing a commitment to equality and social justice.
- Gemma Connell, Housing Services Assistant.

The main challenges I feel are childcare, and a work-life balance. – Sharon Buchanan, Asset Assistant.

What advice would you give to women looking to pursue a career in housing?

A career in housing provides a supportive and inclusive environment where women have the opportunity to lead influence and implement change. - Heather Maitz, Finance Manager.

If you wish to pursue a career in housing think about taking the housing exams as they are a great way to start a career, then get as much experience as possible in various departments; the sky is the limit for women in housing – Maureen Dods, Housing Services Assistant.

I would advise that the Housing Diploma has provided me with significant experience with which to progress as a Housing Officer - Sharon Kane, Housing Officer.

The housing sector offers women a great place to work. It offers rewarding jobs with many opportunities to learn and develop. My advice to women about pursuing a career in housing is to be confident, aim high, and don’t be afraid to do something different. – Claire Samain, Corporate Services Officer.

I’ve always wanted to work in the housing sector and throughout my career so far, I have worked with many inspirational women who have become mentors to me.  They have shown how hard work, commitment and kindness are the tools to having a successful career and enjoying your work. Housing is a brilliant sector to work in and being part of a sector that has a huge impact on individuals' lives is very satisfying. Women in housing are paving the way through moving up the career ladder, and it is very motivating to see this. I am hopeful of following in their footsteps. – Gemma Connell, Housing Services Assistant.

My advice would be “go for it!”
- Sharon Buchanan, Asset Assistant.
