MSP cuts ribbon at refurbished Abbeyfield development

Abbeyfield Scotland, the charity that provides independent living with support for older people across Scotland, recently held a celebration at its house in Garngaber Avenue in Lenzie to mark the completion of an interiors upgrade project.

Local MSP Rona Mackay joined, residents, volunteers, and the Abbeyfield Scotland team to officially cut the ribbon on the newly refurbished reception and entrance area.

The interiors project includes a new welcoming entrance and hallway and was the concept and design of Alison Harding from AMW Designs, who took time during the process to consult the residents to get their ideas and input. The work was carried out by S & D Developments, based in Glasgow.

Rona Mackay MSP said:

“I was delighted to be asked to officially open the newly-renovated Abbeyfield House and congratulate Alison and Abbeyfield Scotland on this wonderful renovation.

“I am particularly impressed at how the wonderful character of this lovely Victorian house has been enhanced to provide a homely, warm atmosphere. Every improvement has been designed for the residents’ comfort and practical use. It is simply a lovely environment in which to live – well done Abbeyfield.”

“We are thrilled that Rona Mackay has taken the time to join us to mark the completion of the interiors project in Lenzie. This investment in the house is a sign of the commitment we have to ensuring that our residents have an environment which is not only practical and modern but homely.

“I want to thank the residents and the staff for their involvement in the project and Alison and S & D Developments who have worked extremely hard to get the project delivered. We are all delighted with the end result!”

Alison Harding, AMW Designs, said:

“This has been a great project to be involved with. All the Abbeyfield Scotland houses are different in architectural style, so each house will have an individual solution which fits with the building and the needs of the residents. My aim was to bring a cohesive and identifiable ‘look’ across the houses to create a warm, welcoming image of the house.” 

Other recent investments in the Lenzie house, which is home to seven residents, includes a new extension which contains a platform lift for access to the upper floors, increased room sizes and brand new en-suites which have been carefully designed in a contemporary style to suit older people’s needs. The programme was sensitively carried out to reflect the character of the Victorian house.
