New Cube homes help transform Glasgow community
Cube is increasing the supply of much-needed affordable housing in the area – and the new homes are helping people live independently for longer.
The regeneration of a Glasgow community has taken another step forward with the opening of 70 new Cube Housing Association homes.
The new homes in Liddesdale Road, Milton, include 20 amenity flats, which are specifically designed for older tenants.
Cube, which is part of Wheatley Group, is increasing the supply of much-needed affordable housing in the area – and the new homes are helping people live independently for longer.
Tenants Ronnie and Carole McFall moved in last month, and Ronnie says the layout and spacious interior is ideal for Carol, who sometimes uses a wheelchair.
Ronnie and Carole were welcomed into their new homes this week by Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, as well as tenants and staff from Cube and Wheatley Group, local elected members and representatives from the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council, and contractors, City Building.
Ronnie, 73 and a retired local government officer, said:
“It’s lovely. We are really pleased. Our last home had steps up to the building, and trying to get upstairs was really difficult. This is much more suitable.
“The rooms are really spacious, it’s all level access and the doors are wide enough. The shower room is also a big help.
“It makes a real difference to our quality of life and is a real weight off our minds. We’re both very happy here.”
Councillor Susan Aitken said:
“I am delighted to see these new high-quality homes in Milton. This project reflects what we are doing across Glasgow in partnership with housing organisations such as Cube to deliver affordable homes that meet the needs of all types of people.
“This much-needed development will be a great asset for the community and I am sure everyone living in them will enjoy their new homes.”
The £7.5m development, which includes Scottish Government grant funding of £3.6m, is a mix of one, two and three-bedroom flats and terraced houses.
Cube Director David MacKenzie said:
“We always want to build homes that meet people’s needs and it’s great to hear how happy Ronnie and Carole are.
“We’re delighted these new homes will help make the area somewhere people are proud to live.”
As part of the contract with Cube, contractors City Building have created jobs and training opportunities for the local community.
Dr Graham Paterson, Executive Director of City Building, said:
“The successful delivery of this development is a perfect example of City Building and Cube Housing Association working in partnership.
“It has helped secure local employment at our nearby Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi) manufacturing facility and helped City Building sustain and create many craft Apprenticeships.”
The 70 new homes in Liddesdale Road are the first new-build social housing in Milton since Cube built new homes – also in Liddesdale Road – in 2001.
GHA, Cube’s partners in Wheatley Group, are well underway on building 54 homes in nearby Cathay Street, with another 49 GHA homes planned on Scaraway Street.
