A new SURF initiative will bring regeneration practitioners together to explore the practical application of the 20 minute neighbourhood concept in deprived places.

20 minute neighbourhoods describe places in which residents can meet almost all of their essential needs within comfortable walking distance from their home – with benefits for local economies, health & wellbeing, community cohesion, and climate change.

As its 2021 Manifesto demonstrated, the SURF network has a keen enthusiasm for the idea, which has been promoted in Oregon and Australia, and is highlighted prominently in the current Programme for Government.

SURF's 20 Minute Neighbourhood Practice Network, supported by the Scottish Government, will feature a free activities programme, including regular network meetings, a national conference, and the sharing of news and developments. A key outcome is to improve access to the methods, resources, guidance and tools available to help cross-sector stakeholders utilise the concept in poorer communities.
