Residents take the (spiced) biscuit at Dundee care home

Residents at a care home in Dundee had some early festive fun this week by competing against each other to build traditional gingerbread houses.

Bupa’s Balcarres Care Home, in Broughty Ferry, took part in National Gingerbread House Day, which saw its residents battle it out in teams of four to create their best baked construction.

Sugary treats were the theme of the day, with the spiced biscuit houses being decorated using icing sugar, sweets and candy canes, and the winning team was treated to luxury chocolates.

Pamela Shaw, Activity Co-ordinator at Bupa’s Balcarres Care Home, said:

“As Christmas can be a lonely time of year for many people, we always have lots going on for the residents in December and encourage activities that will help spread a little joy during the holiday season.

“This was our first year taking part in National Gingerbread House Day and it was a great success. The residents had loads of fun building their biscuit houses and always enjoy a little bit of friendly competition with one another.

“This is also hugely beneficial for them as it encourages them to get involved in enjoyable activities and to socialise with each other. We’ve put the houses on display for the rest of the Christmas season, so everyone can be proud of their individual creations.”

The residents have much more to look forward to in the coming weeks to bring the festive cheer to Balcarres, with Christmas parties and meals out organised, as well as planned activities for National Pie Day on 23 January 2017.
