Heard about the new Social Housing Fund for Improved Walking and Cycling Facilities but have a couple of questions? Find out all you need to know in this Q & A blog:

What is the fund?

The Social Housing Fund is a partnership project between SFHA, Cycling Scotland, Living Streets Scotland and Sustrans Scotland. The funds aims to support residents living in social housing to walk and cycle more often. The fund prioritises areas of high deprivation and aims to make walking and cycling a natural option for everyday journeys.

What does the fund provide?

The fund will cover a range of options to make spaces more accessible for walking, cycling and spending time. These include bike shelters, seating, street furniture, litter bins, bollards and planters as well as lighting and improvements to access points.

How much is available?

Social housing providers can apply for grants of up to £25,000.

What are the benefits?

Residents, tenants and housing staff will have improved facilities that will encourage them to get active, enjoy the outside space and connect with others.

Walking and cycling can have big impacts on physical health and mental wellbeing, encouraging residents to live healthier lifestyles. These activities also help to connect people to the communities where they live, building relationships with those around them and overcoming isolation and loneliness.

Improved facilities, such as storage spaces for bikes, will help to make properties safer, ensuring that routes are clear and accessible for residents.

Can I apply?

If you’re a social housing provider working in Scotland, and keen to promote walking and cycling for your residents – then yes, this fund is for you.

Properties in areas of high deprivation will be prioritised.
