Stephen Neill, 20.02.63 to 13.11.17

Stephen Neill was one of the world’s good guys. A true gentleman and ultimate professional, he battled bureaucracy all his working days to ensure that those he sought to help received the best outcome he could achieve. A committed member of the Trade Union, he believed wholeheartedly in equality of opportunity and social justice.  

Stephen joined the team at Whiteinch on 5 January 2004 as Welfare Rights Officer. Over the years, he developed the service with care and compassion, helping thousands of tenants and local residents keep a roof over their heads and maximise their income. In 2011, when the service was expanded to cover our newly transferred stock, Stephen became the Senior Officer, at the forefront of our strategic response to the so-called ‘bedroom tax’ then the introduction of Universal Credit. Stephen has been acknowledged throughout the sector as being a ‘go to’ guy for welfare rights advice, so much so that, latterly, he had begun a second career as trainer, most notably for the Child Poverty Action Group.

An ardent football fan and music lover, Stephen was also well read and to have a conversation on any subject with him was a real pleasure. A devoted husband and loving father to his three children, Stephen’s ‘bucket list’ had no far-flung destinations to visit, he simply wanted to spend his days with his family at the park, at the cinema or anywhere they wanted to be. Since receiving his cancer diagnosis late last year, he and his family have been an inspiration to everyone who has been privileged to know them, fighting this terrible battle, and facing every setback, with dignity and humour. 

We have lost a dear friend and colleague; our thoughts are with Stephen’s wife, Mary, and the children at this very difficult time.   

Stephen’s funeral will be held on Friday 24 November at 10am at Linn Crematorium, Lainshaw Drive, Glasgow G45 9SP.
