SURF Awards shared learning workshop

Achieving wider community regeneration outcomes through housing-led approaches, 7 May.

Posted In

This free half-day SURF Awards workshop event in the Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh on 7 May, provides an opportunity to explore successful approaches to housing led regeneration initiatives providing wider community outcomes. The winning and highly commended projects from the Housing and Regeneration category highlighted in the 2019 SURF Awards process will provide comment on their experiences and transferable learning.

Those attending will firstly hear from a project representative from the Housing and Regeneration category winner Glenurquhart Care Project (GCP). In 2015, GCP began the development of suitable housing and facilities in Drumnadrochit that would enable elderly people to remain in the community and be cared for locally. That resulted in 12 community-owned houses that are accessible and adaptable to the individual needs of residents.

This will be followed by input from the Housing and Regeneration highly commended Kingdom Housing Fraser Avenue, Inverkeithing project. The project aimed to demolish a failed housing estate in a deprived area of Fife and replace it with an attractive new development featuring high-quality affordable homes.

Guests will then hear from the second of the Housing and Regeneration highly commended projects, Wheatley Group’s Shawbridge Street, Pollokshaws project. The project has delivered 42 affordable homes on a formerly vacant and derelict site and created a new civic square in front of the historic Pollokshaws Parish Church.

The event will close with SFHA providing detail on its current priorities towards supporting the wider housing sector. This will be followed by a short input from private developer Urban Union that looks at the role they play in housing development in partnership with local stakeholders.

The SURF Awards Housing and Regeneration judging panel team – comprising representatives of Built Environment Forum Scotland, Scottish Government More Homes Division, Scottish Land Commission and SFHA – were particularly impressed by the level of community and tenant involvement in all three shortlisted developments.

This workshop will be delivered with support from the SFHA.
