The Open University in Scotland: funded places available on health and social care modules

Funding is available for training courses in health and social care.

The OU in Scotland is currently offering two routes to employers and individuals to access fully funded training available across its health and social care provision. 

National transition training fund 

Supported by the Scottish Government’s National Transition Training Fund, a limited number of fully funded places* are available to individuals providing the opportunity to study an OU undergraduate level module starting in October 2021, selecting from across a range of health and social care options – mostly at SCQF level 7: 

  • Introducing health and social care 

  • Introduction to healthcare practice 

  • Foundations for social work practice 

  • Perspectives in health and social care 

  • Leading, managing, caring 

*Subject to meeting eligibility criteria. 

Individuals should express their interest by completing the online application form by 11:59pm on 1 September 2021

Flexible workforce development fund 

Supported by the Scottish Government’s Flexible Workforce Development Fund, small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) – organisations with less than 250 employees – in Scotland can access training up to the value of £5,000 delivered online by the OU. 

The training options available are at SCQF levels 10 and 11 with course types including short courses, microcredentials, undergraduate and postgraduate level modules, addressing the following skills priorities: health and social care, leadership and business, digital and IT, green economy. 

Many health and social care modules are starting in October 2021 with the enrolment deadline being 9th September: 

  • Approaches to mental health 

  • Exploring practice 

  • Infectious diseases and health 

  • Investigating health and social care 

  • Issues in research with children and young people 

  • Leading, managing, caring 

  • Young lives, parenting and families 

  • Children and young people’s worlds 

SMEs who have not yet availed of the FWDF during 2020-21 can still apply through the OU until  Thursday 30 September 2021 (being mindful of OU registration deadlines). 

Applications to the FWDF for 2021-22 are now open, for courses delivered by the OU starting from October 2021 and up to August 2022.
