Transformation of historic stables into new homes wins prestigious design award for Wheatley
GHA and Lowther Homes coverted a stable block once belonging to working horses in Glasgow city centre.
Wheatley Group’s development of the historic Bell Street stables in the Merchant City was named the winner in the Affordable Housing Category at the Scottish Design Awards.
The development, which saw GHA and Lowther Homes convert a stable block that was once the home of working horses, belonging to the city's cleansing department, also won a commendation in the Building Reuse category.
The £7 million development saw the historic B-listed building transformed into 52 new flats for mid-market rent.
The refurbishment of the block was made possible thanks to a £2 million grant from the Scottish Government and support from Glasgow City Council. It was designed by Collective Architecture and delivered by CCG.
The awards celebrate the best architecture and design projects in Scotland and showcase the value of creativity and design.
The awards were held online because of coronavirus restrictions.
