Work begins on 28 new homes in Port Glasgow

First phase of development begins.

Posted In

A ceremonial cutting of the first ‘sod’ of turf marks the beginning of a multi-million pound development of almost 100 new homes in the Slaemuir area of Port Glasgow.

River Clyde Homes plans to build the homes in the coming years, and the first phase of 28 new homes began last week.

The plans include the demolition of all the ‘stub block flats’ to make way for modern homes, all of which are two storey, own door, energy efficient properties.

Owners and tenants voted overwhelmingly in favour of the demolition of the blocks and new build option, and River Clyde Homes has appointed Cruden Buildings and Renewals Limited to build the homes.

Stage one of the development will see 28 new properties to provide safe, comfortable homes to the highest standard possible.

Gary Wilson, Executive Director of Property Services at River Clyde Homes, said:

“We plan to take a phased approach to this project. By building on vacant land within the Slaemuir estate first, we will have brand new homes available for existing block residents to move into before we demolish the first block. We will then continue the cycle, building on the cleared site to provide new homes for residents until all of the low-rise blocks are replaced.

“In addition to new homes, there will be a number of community benefit initiatives as part of our commitment to aiding the skills and development of an Inverclyde workforce.”

Slaemuir was built in the late 60s/early 70s to alleviate overcrowding in Port Glasgow and the estate remains popular with residents. The new builds will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroomed houses to cater for the varied needs of the residents.

Allan Callaghan, Managing Director of Cruden Buildings and Renewals Limited, said:

“We’re delighted to be working with River Clyde Homes to build a total of 96 new homes within Slaemuir. This first phase will see 28 new homes ready by autumn 2018, which will deliver a real boost to local residents and allow the continuing regeneration of the area.

“These high quality, modern, one, two and three-bedroom homes will provide residents with energy efficient eco-friendly housing that will be warm and cheap to run. Cruden Building and Renewable Limited and River Clyde Homes have a shared commitment to build and deliver at standards of performance ahead of current requirements.

“With all of our projects, Cruden is committed to giving back to the local community and at Slaemuir, we will do exactly that. Our Cruden Academy delivers best practice training and education as well as an award winning modern apprenticeship programme. As we work together with River Clyde Homes, and our supply chain partners on this exciting project, we look forward to providing opportunities to local people and raising awareness of the diverse career opportunities available in this very rewarding sector.”
