Advisory Group invites housing associations and tenants to human rights discussion events

Housing associations and tenants are encouraged to attend discussion events organised by the Advisory Group on Human Rights Leadership.

The First Minister’s Advisory Group on Human Rights Leadership is holding a series of discussion events on human rights in Scotland, which housing associations and their tenants are encouraged to attend.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon set up the Advisory Group last year to look at how Scotland can be a leader in the field of human rights, including economic, social, cultural and environmental rights. The group is independent of the Scottish Government and is due to make its report and recommendations to the First Minister in December.

To help inform its report and recommendations, the Advisory Group has organised a series of events across Scotland to gather views. A spokesperson for the group explained:

“Human rights are a vital part of a just and equal society. They give you a set of rights and freedoms regardless of where you are from, how old you are, what you believe, or how you choose to live your life.

“How your human rights are affected by governments and other bodies is becoming increasingly important. The Advisory Group will make recommendations on how existing rights can be protected and examine how Scotland can go further in demonstrating human rights leadership.

“We really want to hear your views and feedback on the recommendations that have been developed and how they can be made as effective as possible in improving the lives of people.”

Discussion events have been set up in:

  • Dundee on September 17;
  • Glasgow on September 20; and
  • Inverness on September 25.

Housing associations and tenants are particularly welcome. Commenting on the events, Clare MacGillivray of the Edinburgh Tenants Federation said:

“This is a great chance for tenants and housing providers to be engaged in the process of thinking about the future of human rights in Scotland – and potentially how housing is framed in that too.”

Full details on the events can be found on the Scottish Community Development Centre website and on Facebook and Twitter, using #HumanRightsLeadership. Additional details can also be found on the website of the First Minister’s Advisory Group on Human Rights Leadership.
