Celebrating housing apprentices: Muirhouse and Orkney Housing Associations
Today’s apprentices are from Muirhouse and Orkney Housing Associations.
Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2019 is taking place from 4 to 8 March. To mark the week and celebrate the benefits Modern Apprenticeships bring to the housing sector – and the apprentices themselves – SFHA is featuring some of its members’ apprentices in Housing Scotland Today.
Today’s apprentices are from Muirhouse Housing Association and Orkney Housing Association.
Courtney Wilson, age 19, is based at Muirhouse Housing Association in Edinburgh.
Courtney is currently doing a two-year Housing Admin Traineeship and working towards a Modern Apprenticeship in Business Administration in the first year.
Courtney said: “The benefit of my apprenticeship with Muirhouse Housing Association is that I can work while I learn and do it at my own pace. It also builds my confidence and skills for future opportunities.
“I am very enthusiastic about learning more about housing.
“In the future, once I’m fully qualified and experienced in my admin role, I hope to get a permanent job in housing.”
Orkney Housing Association (OHAL) employed its first Business Administration Modern Apprentices in 2015, and since then, four have completed their SVQ2. The association currently has one apprentice working towards SVQ2 and two continuing on to SVQ3 whilst working at the association.
Leanne Omand was one of OHAL’s first apprentices. In 2017, she applied for and was offered a full-time, permanent position as Customer Service Assistant.
OHAL’s apprentices all said they would recommend an apprenticeship as a “great way” to gain on the job skills and experience while obtaining a valuable qualification, highlighting the “amazing support” they receive from both OHAL and Orkney College.
