Historic Opportunity to End Homelessness Together

SFHA’s Sally Thomas comments on the publication of 'Ending Homelessness Together High Level Action Plan'.

Posted In

SFHA’s Chief Executive Sally Thomas has today welcomed the publication of the 'Ending Homelessness Together High Level Action Plan' by the Scottish Government.

Describing it as “an historic opportunity” Thomas said:

“Momentum across a range of sectors to get to grips and tackle homelessness has been growing since it was included in the Programme for Government last year. This plan picks up on the work done by the Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Action Group and aims to turn it into reality.

“The publication of this action plan gives us an historic opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable people across Scotland facing homelessness.

“We have the political will, we have funding available and we have key housing agencies in housing ready to deliver. There is an appetite to do better and move Scotland towards a fairer, more equal society. Our members are already helping to tackle homelessness through practical work in communities, sustaining tenancies and giving people access to the best quality homes.

“Let’s work together now to turn this plan into reality”.

Our work

SFHA represents members at the Homelessness Prevention Strategy Group and the Rapid Rehousing Transition Plan Sub-group.

Local authorities are drafting Rapid Rehousing plans at the moment and will potentially be asking you to increase lets to homeless. If they haven’t been in touch with you, please get in touch with them to ask about their plans.

The plan is to let to people assessed as homeless as quickly as possible with housing support available from before the start of the tenancy for those that need it. The main message we are sharing with partners is the availability of support from before a tenancy starts. A few housing associations have suggested if they were given funding they could provide their own support, and SFHA will lobby for this. Get in touch if you wish to discuss this further.

Get involved

We have organised a conference called From Homeless to Housed so that you can learn more about rapid rehousing and housing first, as well as issues relating to housing support, to make sure you are well-informed to have conversations about housing support with your partners and colleagues. We know there are a lot of draws on your training budget at this time of year, but this will be an important shift in the sector; to help you attend, we have reduced the price of the event for a short period to £179 (a saving of £40!), so please take a look.

SFHA is keen to support members with this – there is a presentation available online, as well as a briefing – but get in touch if you would like specific support.
