Scottish Government announces engagement events for consultation on building standards and fire safety

The consultation is part of the work of the Ministerial Working Group on Fire Safety set up after the Grenfell Tower tragedy.

The Scottish Government has announced a series of engagement events held in connection with its consultation proposing significant changes in building standards and fire safety.

The consultation is part of the work of the Ministerial Working Group on Fire Safety set up after the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The consultation has been launched following reports by two expert working groups.

The first group examined verification, inspection and certification of building standards. The work of this group sought to ensure building works comply with design plans, particularly for fire safety elements. The consultation proposes that greater resources are made available to building control departments in local authorities, and that greater emphasis is placed on inspecting works on site, particularly where the work is important for fire safety.

The second working group looked at whether specific fire safety standards should be changed or enhanced. The consultation proposes a number of changes around cladding and escape, but the most significant proposal is to introduce a requirement for fire suppression systems in all new build social housing and in all flats.

The consultation is open until 26 September. The Scottish Government is holding a series of events across Scotland to engage with stakeholders on key themes emerging from the recommendations of the consultation and to encourage responses to the consultation. Further information on the events and how to book a place can be found on the event flyer.

SFHA will be providing a briefing for members and will also run consultation events to gather members’ views to inform our response. For further information, please contact David Stewart, SFHA Policy Lead, at dstewart@sfha.co.uk.
