SFHA Annual Conference Speaker Interview: Bethan Proctor

Ahead of our Annual Conference, taking place on 14 and 15 June at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow, Bethan Proctor, Policy & External Affairs Manager at Community Housing Cymru, shared her thoughts on decarbonising housing across the UK and how we can inspire low carbon behaviours.

What are you discussing at the conference and why is this an important issue?

I will be discussing financing the decarbonisation of housing. This is an important issue because without the right investment, big ambitions that both housing associations and governments have to reach net-zero by 2050 will not be met.

What does Scotland’s social housing sector need to continue playing its part in tackling climate change?

If Scotland is anything like Wales, we need adequate investment, the scaling up of local skills and supply chains, and tenant buy-in.

How can we inspire low-carbon behaviours?

We can inspire low-carbon behaviours by helping the sector, tenants, and industry to understand why decarbonisation must take place. It is good for the climate but there are also a multitude of other benefits such as boosting local economies with new jobs, alleviating fuel poverty, and saving the NHS millions of pounds each year in treatment costs.
