SFHA Annual Conference Speaker Interview: Sara Jackson

Ahead of our Annual Conference, taking place on 14 and 15 June at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Glasgow, Sara Jackson, Chief Operating Officer at the Scottish Whisky Association, shared her thoughts on the future of the workplace and how to transform it.

What are you discussing at the conference and why is this an important issue?

I’ll be taking delegates through a very brief history of the changing nature of the modern workplace and looking at global workplace trends that we could use to influence how businesses rethink the approach to the way we work.

What does a resilient organisation look like to you?

The rule book for how we work has well and truly been ripped up. Businesses have a brilliant opportunity to try new things and do things differently. Resilience to me is an organisation that’s willing to admit when a plan isn’t working and to be agile and adapt accordingly.

Has the pandemic changed our working practices forever?

Yes – without a doubt. We’ve seen a faster shift in changes to the way we work in the past 18 months than we have over the past 10 years.

What simple actions can organisations take to make a difference to staff wellbeing?

Prioritise it! Make the space and time to implement initiatives that allow individuals to interact on a personal level. Virtual Book Clubs or Film clubs are a great way to share what you’ve been watching or reading. Random coffee chats are a great way to engage individuals from across the business who wouldn’t usually speak to each other daily. A quick 15 minute call where you’re assigned to someone random where you can talk about your day.

We’ve all been through so much as human beings over the past 2 years – prioritising time out is paramount and an employer who can provide this, encourage it and promote it will immediately make a difference.
