SFHA launches summer food drive
SFHA is collecting donations for local foodbank to address increased demand for emergency food for children during the school holidays.
SFHA has launched a summer food drive to collect donations for its local foodbank, following a call for donations by the Trussell Trust.
Figures from the Trussell Trust show that the need for foodbanks rises during the summer months due to an increased demand for emergency food for children during the school holidays.
Over a third of all food distributed by the foodbank network throughout the year goes to children, but there is extra financial pressure to provide main meals during the school holidays for families who rely on free school meals during term time.
SFHA would like to encourage its members to organise their own food drives by contacting their local foodbank and finding out what items it urgently needs.
Whilst these donations are vital for meeting immediate need during the holidays, the Trussell Trust has warned that foodbanks cannot be a long-term solution, and has called for better support to be in place all-year round to protect people from hunger.
As such, SFHA would also like to hear about initiatives organised by our members to prevent hunger and promote food sustainability.
If your organisation has a food sustainability initiative in place or is collecting donations for a local foodbank, SFHA encourages you to send details to Conor Hill at firstname.lastname@example.org for the chance to be featured in Housing Scotland Today.
