World of Housing launches recruitment for second cohort

World of Housing is part of SFHA’s Routes to Housing thematic campaign and aims to create a pipeline of talented upcoming professionals to sustain the future of the housing sector in Scotland.

Recruitment for World of Housing’s second cohort, commencing in January 2023, is now underway.

World of Housing is part of SFHA’s Routes to Housing thematic campaign and aims to create a pipeline of talented upcoming professionals to sustain the future of the housing sector in Scotland.

Earlier in 2022, World of Housing saw its first cohort of 12 members of staff, from seven organisations – Almond Housing Association, Berwickshire Housing Association, Caledonia Housing Association, Clyde Valley Housing Association, Eildon Housing Association, Loreburn Housing Association and Wheatley Group – taking part in the GEM programme. The programme challenges those taking part – GEMs – to look at themselves and housing differently, fulfil their potential and become people of influence in their organisations and the wider housing sector.

World of Housing also brings together ‘change leaders’, from within the sector, who help to shape the accent of the Scottish GEM cohort, emphasise the importance of improvement and adapting to change and develop and design a recruitment process which works for them and explores how to accelerate personal leadership development.

The influence of the World of Housing campaign on the GEM Programme’s housing policy studies will be evident during June and July. GEMs from Scotland will work with their colleagues from England, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland to review housing policy across the UK.

Aaron Hill, SFHA's Director of Policy and Membership, will join experts to kick start the Housing Policy GEM Shack on 16 June by providing input to the GEMs on the housing policy landscape in Scotland. The GEMs will then head for Westminster for a learning event on 4 July hosted by John Healey MP, where they will interact with law makers from Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the UK. The GEM Shack will conclude on 6 July with a comparative study of housing policies across the UK, with GEMs presenting their analyses to a panel of policy experts.

In October, the World of Housing will see seven GEMs from Almond, Caledonia, Clyde Valley, and Eildon hosting their counterparts from Holland. The study visit is part of the GEM Programme's exchange module and enables upcoming professionals to explore the challenges faced by housing organisations in the UK and the Netherlands. The Dutch visitors will take a closer look at the Scottish housing sector through an agenda which reviews sustainability in the round and the challenges presented by poverty, homelessness, and the day-to-day realities of delivering housing services in Scotland. The visit will culminate in a learning transfer exercise which will be written up before the GEMs engage in a reciprocal visit hosted by their Dutch colleagues in the spring of 2023.
