About the Tour

RIHAF members are invited to attend a Study Tour of Shetland in May 2018.  Hosted by Hjaltland Housing Association, the visit will commence with the tour on Thursday afternoon, followed by dinner and then the RIHAF meeting on Friday morning.

The tour has been developed to allow RIHAF members to visit more remote rural and island communities and promote learning through visiting innovative projects and developments.

Each RIHAF member organisation has been allocated one FREE place.

Hjaltland Housing Association Ltd was created from a merger in 1980 between Scottish Airports Ltd, formed in 1974, and the then Hjaltland Housing Association, formed in 1975. These associations were originally formed to aid the Shetland Islands Council in providing housing for incoming oil industry workers.

Prior to 1984, the Association's administration was carried out in Edinburgh by Link Housing Association, with part-time Shetland staff managing lettings visits and maintenance. In 1984, the management committee conducted a review and decided that an improved service would require full-time Shetland staff.

By March 2018 the Association had grown to provide 755 homes, distributed throughout Shetland from Unst in the north to Sumburgh in the south, and from Sandness in the west  to Whalsay in the east. Just over half the Association's houses are situated in Lerwick.

The Association continues to develop and are currently on site with 61 new homes with a further 32 due to start later this year.  The Association plan to complete 180 units over the next 5 years.

As well as providing homes for single people and families, the Association has been working closely with the Shetland Islands Council, and now has several properties providing homes for people with particular housing needs.
