Join SFHA and Professor Vikki McCall for a focused roundtable exploring how housing can support independent living for older and disabled people. We’ll discuss the challenges, opportunities, and policy changes needed to deliver accessible, adaptable homes that meet changing needs across Scotland.

This event is part of our work to shape housing policy ahead of the 2026 Scottish election and will reflect on our newest policy position paper: Homes Fit for the Future.

Independent Living

Affordable housing that supports independent living is therefore key to prevention, supporting public services and tackling poverty and inequality – key priorities of government – but is independent living a key priority for the Scottish Government?

In this roundtable chaired by Professor Vikki McCall, Professor of Social Policy at the University of Stirling we invite SFHA members to discuss:

  • How we can best respond to the housing needs of an aging population and increasing levels of disability
  • What solutions can the sector provide in this key area but also to tell us what is holding us back, in policy and practise terms
  • How we support accessibility, adaptability and technology enabled care
  • What is needed by specialist housing providers? What do we need to consider for mainstream housing?
  • What other voices do we need to hear from or speak to influence on this agenda?
  • What SFHA needs to call for in policy terms ahead of the next election to support independent living
