The housing association is a huge supporter of Glasgow Regional Opportunities for Work (GROW) run by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce.

Ten S3 and S4 students from Woodfarm High and Mearns Castle High schools visited head office recently to find out about career opportunities in social housing.

During the recent GROW visits, pupils spoke to staff ranging from housing, finance and customer service officers to a repairs co-ordinator and Director of Communities and Assets Scott Stewart.

GROW Programme Co-ordinator Fiona Baxendale said: “It was great for pupils to have such easy and professional access to staff in different roles across the organisation. We are delighted Barrhead Housing is such an enthusiastic partner of the programme. GROW is an ambitious employability programme across the Glasgow City Region.

Backed by JPMorgan Chase and delivered by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Glasgow City Region DYW groups, GROW is transforming how young people experience career inspiration. Through meaningful, hands‑on interactions, the programme helps young people see themselves in a future career”

Community Investment Manager Bryan Dando said: “We are passionate about promoting to young people and other professionals the exciting range of career opportunities available across social housing.

“Feedback from the students confirmed the sessions were both educational and fun. Activities ranged from interviewing staff across the organisation, building their dream home from Lego to a quiz on our five-year strategy and community investment achievements over the past year.”

BH, which owns and manages more than 1000 affordable homes, is a passionate advocate also of Routes to Housing, an initiative encouraging young people to pursue careers in social housing.

Run by the Scottish Federation of Social Housing, it has involved BH in the past year organising everything from work experience opportunities and representation at numerous school career evenings to making 80-day placements available to university social service undergraduates.
