Clyde Valley Housing Association (CVHA) has joined forces with Connecting Scotland to distribute 120 free iPads with mobile Wi-Fi access to its customers with little or no internet access.

CVHA, which has more than 4,000 properties across Lanarkshire, has been working at the heart of the community to help its customers to cope with the effects of the pandemic.

To assist its customers with no, or limited, internet access, CVHA has united with Connecting Scotland, a Scottish Government initiative being delivered by the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations, which was set up in response to the pandemic to help get digitally excluded citizens in Scotland online.

The main objective is to distribute the iPads to CVHA customers with children to allow them to continue their education from home.

Lynn Wassell, Clyde Valley Chief Executive, said: “We are delighted to be part of Connecting Scotland’s campaign, helping digitally excluded customers get connected and being online is very important to Clyde Valley Group.

“This project will help our most vulnerable and isolated customers keep connected and gain access to essential online services that will improve their overall wellbeing.”

Throughout the coronavirus crisis, the internet is keeping people connected to friends and family, informed and entertained, and able to learn, work, shop and access health information and other public services. However, some people can’t access these benefits, because they don’t have the confidence, kit and connectivity at home. Connecting Scotland is working to change this and help get citizens in Scotland online.

Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said: “Access to the internet brings huge benefits, especially during these challenging times. It provides a way to keep in touch and keep us informed with access to health information and other public services. It is also an important way for people of all ages to further their education, find work and training opportunities.

“The distribution of these iPads with mobile Wi-Fi access through the Connecting Scotland programme will make a real difference to households across Lanarkshire.

“We would encourage anyone who is eligible to apply for a device, connectivity and support so that they can get online and stay safe.”

CVHA customers are eligible to apply for a free iPad and mobile Wi-Fi access if they are:

  • digitally excluded

  • do not have access to an appropriate device to access the internet

  • not connected to the internet at home

  • have a low income and can’t afford to buy a device or pay for internet access and

  • are a household with children

  • care leaver up to the age of 26.
