Housing Changes Lives: Adaptations

Robert and Mary, Caledonia Housing Association  

Robert and his partner Mary have been tenants in their Caledonia Housing Association cottage in a quiet cul-de-sac in Coupar Angus since it was built 17 years ago. 

Robert likes their two-bedroom home and that it is within a small development.

He said: “There are only 20 cottages and they are all a bit different. I have a front and back garden and an extra strip of lawn down the side. 

“The house is on one level. This suits our needs as Mary has mobility problems, and she can’t manage stairs. 

“We had a wet room fitted by Caledonia. It was recommended by an occupational therapist as Mary couldn’t manage the step up into the original shower. 

“The repairs team responded quickly. I am pleased they did as the shower room was completed just before lockdown. I was impressed with the workmen, particular the joiner. They did a quality job. 

“The new electric shower and wet room makes a real difference as it suits Mary’s needs. There are four holding rails and a seat and the floor is non-slip too.” 

As part of its Scottish Parliament election manifesto, SFHA is calling on all political parties to commit to a review of the Housing for Varying Needs Standard, to mainstreaming standards of accessibility in order to deliver for homes that are suitable throughout people’s lives, and to increasing RSLs’ adaptations funding to £17 million a year.
