This year’s Scottish Rural and Islands Housing Conference, taking place between 27–28 October, will explore the journey towards net zero for rural communities.

The conference, hosted by Lochaber Housing Association, will look at topical issues concerning rural housing and communities in Scotland and explore changes and  initiatives that are taking place.

The conference’s opening plenary, ‘The housing conundrum: new homes versus better homes’,  will consider:

  • New build versus retrofit – which is the priority, and can both be achieved in the timescales?
  • Are energy efficient measures in tenants’ interests if these will push up rents?

Other programme highlights include:

  • A just transition to low-carbon heat in off-gas areas
  • Highlands and Islands Enterprise: HIE strategy and operating plan
  • Tackling the cost of living for tenants
  • Energy systems of the future
  • Making a positive social impact

The year’s event also sees the return of The RIHAF Development of the 2020s Award, an opportunity for rural housing associations across Scotland to enter their best developments.

The pre-conference RIHAF meeting for RIHAF members will take place on Wednesday 26 October 2022.
