In September last year, the Scottish Government announced a grant fund of up to £50 million for housing for Ukrainian refugees. Aimed at boosting the supply of homes by March 2023, a number of local authorities have been able to make use of the fund either to bring their own empty properties into use or work with housing associations to do so. Funding through the scheme is still available, however applications which deliver completed homes by 31 March 2023 will be prioritised. There is no doubt that the pressure on housing generally remains a huge issue for local authorities and Housing Associations, but the need for accommodation for Ukrainian and other refugees is also likely to increase in the coming months.

Given the unique needs of refugees, planning these homes in partnership with the local authority is vital to ensure that health care, education and community support is also in place. The homes are intended to temporarily house Ukrainian refugees for up to three years. .
