Why did you choose a career in the social housing sector?

I didn’t really chose a career in social housing.  When I was doing my accountancy qualification, I audited a couple of Registered Social Landlords.  When a job came up at Hillcrest, I applied and was successful.  From there, I never looked back.  I found the role so diverse and the work we do inspiring.

This only increased when I joined Gowrie, who also did “care in the community” as it was called then.  To see the difference you made to people and the improvement in the quality of their life and achievements was so rewarding.

Accountancy was my first love but housing and support quickly became equals.

What are some of the things you’re proudest of from your career so far?

There are so many things I am proud of, but very few of them I achieved on my own.  I am proud to be the Chief Executive of one of the largest and most diverse housing providers in Scotland.  A few others that I can’t take full credit for but was definitely involved in are:

  • Response to Covid
  • Commemoration to Jack Robertson
  • Completion of Wharton Square in the Quartermile District of Edinburgh
  • Accessible Music Festival
  • Living Wage Employer for all companies
  • Hillcrest Foundation
  • First ESG report

What are you most excited about as an SFHA Board Member?

Being a Board Member for the SFHA is extremely rewarding.  You see first hand the hard work and dedication of the team and how much they are putting into keeping housing up the agenda.  I am excited to see how housing, but current and future housing with climate change and becoming more sustainable.
