BBC Sunday Show featuring SFHA Chief Executive Richard Meade

SFHA Chief Executive Richard Meade was a guest on BBC Scotland's flagship political programme The Sunday Show last week as he argued for more funding to tackle the housing emergency.

In an interview with BBC Scotland's political correspondent Lynsey Bews, Richard cited SFHA's joint research with Shelter Scotland and CIH Scotland which shows Scotland must build over 15,000 homes per year over the course of the next parliament to meet housing need, which will require public investment of £8.2billion.

Richard also welcomed measures in the Housing Bill which will strengthen homelessness prevention. While the government intends to exempt Mid-Market Rent homes from rent controls in secondary legislation, he reiterated SFHA's calls for this to be done as soon as possible.

The Cabinet Secretary for Housing committed to exempting MMR from rent controls in principle in the Housing Emergency Action Plan, which also included a four-year funding commitment of £4.9billion for the housing budget.

Following Richard's interview, the Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Shona Robison MSP, acknowledged the importance of social housing in supporting the Scottish Government's efforts to eradicate child poverty. She also said the Scottish Government remained committed to its target to build 110,000 homes by 2032.
