SFHA is invited to input into research commissioned by the Scottish Land Commission on Vacant and Derelict Land Re-Use in Scotland, to evaluate if re-use has increased and what challenges remain.

If you have experience remediating brownfield sites or other vacant and derelict site development and would like to contribute to the review, please email sfitton@sfha.co.uk. The review is taking place over the next two weeks, with a report for end of March.  Thank you!

Some of the review questions are:

  • Are there any particular type of sites which represent a challenge within affordable housing development?
  • What are the principal barriers to the re-use of these sites, e.g. site size/configuration, planning, ownership, market etc.?
  • Are newer policies around VDL and ‘stuck sites’ leading to greater site re-use, e.g. brownfield v greenfield development?
  • In your opinion does funding and support focus on the right areas or would you suggest any policy/funding changes that could assist re-use?
  • And an opportunity to contribute successful examples.
  • The review is based off the Taskforce's 2019 report/recommendations: https://www.landcommission.gov.scot/downloads/5f73555fbfe93_VDL%20Task%20Force%20Recommendations.pdf
