General Election: SFHA webinar to explain how social landlords can comply with electoral law

As we draw closer to a General Election, SFHA has joined with the Electoral Commission to next week host a webinar on how social landlords can stay on the right side of electoral law.
Whilst the date for the upcoming election has not yet been announced, Parliament must be dissolved on the fifth anniversary of the date it first met and then allow for an election campaign of 25 working days. This means the next General Election must be held by 28 January 2025 at the latest- the Prime Minister can also decide to name an earlier date.
Whilst responsibility for housing is devolved to the Scottish Parliament, the General Election will involve many important issues for housing associations and tenants, including in areas such as social security and energy.
Our webinar, on 24 April, with the Electoral Commission will ensure housing associations can add their voice to an important debate throughout the election campaign whilst staying on the right side of the law.
The webinar will also explore how we can encourage social tenants to participate in the democratic process- they are among the demographics currently least likely to vote.
The Electoral Commission is the independent body which oversees elections, regulates political finance in the UK, and works to promote public confidence in the democratic process. They will share resources and information which members can use to support tenants and staff to participate in the election, as well as key guidance for organisations engaging in the election and tips for staying within the rules.
