Michael Tornow, Public Health Scotland

Michael Tornow is Senior Health Improvement Officer at Public Health Scotland working in its Housing and Homelessness Team, to maximise the impact good housing has for improving health and reducing health inequalities.

What will you be discussing at the conference?

Public Health Scotland (PHS) has published a report looking at  housing tenure and access to, and use of, private and public greenspace during the COVID-19 pandemic. PHS will be discussing learning from the pandemic which continues to shape our future.

What are the benefits of having access to green space?

There is strong evidence that spending time in good quality greenspace can improve both physical and mental wellbeing. However we know that not everyone has the same access to quality greenspaces and the health benefits afforded by them.

How can development address the lack of green space for tenants?

PHS will discuss recommendations which include the ambition that newly developed housing and existing housing can be retrofitted to improve access to high quality greenspace for all including access to gardens, private or shared outside space.
