Waverley Housing is celebrating after winning the Good Practice in Widening Participation Award at TPAS Scotland's National Good Practice Awards.

The award, which is sponsored by Bield Housing Association, is about showcasing the work of social landlords which are actively investing in and supporting tenants and communities, and is a welcome recognition of the community engagement activites of Waverley's staff and tenants.

Among those activities included Waverley Housing’s Making Memories initiative which has provided access to venues and experiences for tenants and their families to enjoy in the local area.  This initiative has been a key way the association has re-engaged with tenants, and the TPAS award judges said it reflected a clever and ‘key’ way to unlocking and widening tenant participation.

Following the award, Waverley paid tribute to individuals and organisations which have supported the initiative. This included Scottish Borders Council, Waverley's wider team CLLD Fund, Sustainable Borders, Scottish Procurement Alliance, and also the 10  local attractions who have supported Making Memories, opening their doors and hearts to Waverley Housing's tenants.

Waverley's Tenant Review Team was also shortlisted in the Tenant Group of the Year category, a real achievement having only been resurrected in Spring 2024,whilst tenant Tanya Thomson attended the full TPAS conference having been shortlisted in the prestigious category - Tenant of the year – (The Alan Ferguson Award).

Although unsuccessful, the CEO of TPAS took time during the ceremony to speak to Tanya personally and commend her on all her efforts and endeavours.

Brian Pearson Head of Housing said: "Having only applied in three categories, and with a high number of entries, it was very pleasing to be shortlisted for all three which is testament to all our staff involved.

"To attend with staff at the TPAS awards and see the efforts of Craig MacDougall and our wider team who tirelessly work to improve Waverley’s community engagement, along with tenants like Tanya Thomson,  rewarded in the recognition from our peers was heartening.

"Tanya brings a positive energy to both her community and our Tenant Review Team, and her involvement came from participating in the Making Memories project."
